Over the following weeks, a poignant ritual unfolded before Peter and Mary’s eyes. As each old rose (and they were always red ones) withered and faded, a fresh bloom appeared at their son’s grave without fail. Bewildered and emotionally stirred, the couple became convinced that someone was tending to their boy’s resting place when they were not there.
But they could do little to find out who it might be. Besides, they had already lost their boy. What difference did a fresh rose appearing regularly on his grave make when they could never have him back alive and well?
