As with other sports, the NFL has been riddled with problems with illegal substances. In the 1980s, the vice almost destroyed the league so much so that commissioner Paul Tagliabue enacted a policy that is still enacted to this day.

One of the major causes for this rule was a Sports Illustrated cover story that detailed former Raiders star Lyle Alzado’s time with the vice. It also discussed how he felt that bad habit had led to the brain tumor that killed him at just 43 years old.
