The Mistake of the Century
The British weather forecaster Michael Fish was active between 1962 and 2016 and was one of the most famous weather reporters in the United Kingdom. However, Fish was also the man behind one of the worst mistakes in the history of weather coverage, which happened while he was working for BBC Weather.
Fish failed to predict the Great Storm of 1987, one of the most brutal the United Kingdom has seen in recent decades. He later apologized for his mistake, but it’s still incredibly cringy that he discredited the news of the storm on air by saying “Well, if you’re watching, don’t worry, there isn’t [a hurricane on the way].”
