Coming Out: 50-Plus Gay Athletes Who Have Broken Boundaries

Nicola Adams

The retired British boxer Nicola Adams competed in the flyweight category, but she’s a boxing and LGTQ+ heavyweight by any other metric. Nicknamed “Babyface,” she retired with a flawless record of five wins and one draw and landed the Olympic gold medal as an amateur in London 2012.

In addition to being a former boxer, Adams is an openly-gay Black woman and the first LGBTQ+ person to win a boxing Olympic medal. In 2012, The Independent selected her as that year’s most influential LGBTQ+ person in Britain.
