Not long after David Kopay made history by announcing publicly that he was gay in 1975, another American football great followed in his footsteps. Roy Simmons passed away in 2014 at the age of 57, but he spend his entire life knowing that, in his own words, he was “a proud gay Black man.”
Simmons was surely also proud of his fantastic athletic career, which granted him the unique experience of playing a Super Bowl game. Simmons played almost all of his games as a New York Giants guard.
