Coming Out: 50-Plus Gay Athletes Who Have Broken Boundaries
Thomas Hitzlsperger
The German former midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger wasn’t the first soccer player to come out as gay, but he’s probably the most famous male soccer star to do so. A former Germany international with more than 50 caps, Hitzlsperger played brilliantly for the German side VfB Stuttgart and had a pretty good run in the Premier League too, performing for Aston Villa, West Ham United, and Everton.
Following his retirement, Hitzlsperger started working as a director of football, tasked with—among other things—deciding which players soccer clubs should buy and sell.
