In the late ’90s, the WNBA was just getting started, and the phenomenal Sheryl Swoopes was still married to her high-school sweetheart. The first woman to sign a professional contract with the WNBA, Swoopes came out as gay in October 2005.
Arguably the first major female superstar in basketball, Swoopes started living her truth at a time when doing so was still rare and risky. Luckily, her decision never impacted her career, and she’s now a Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee.
