A Dire Drug Problem

Some people claim that, out of Iran’s 80-plus million residents, 20 million are addicted to drugs. To make matters worse, the poorest citizens of Tehran aren’t consuming alcohol or marijuana, but opium, which is highly destructive and addictive.

Interviewed by News 12, the Tehran resident Babek Itzhaki went as far as saying that “there is hardly a house without opium” and that cooking opium at home after every meal is a run-of-the-mill activity in modern-day Iran. That is, of course, when drug addicts are lucky even to have a home!
