In addition to “The Eagle of Tehran,” Pouria Khojastehpay’s project is also an enlightening exhibition of what the Tehran underground crime world is like. With photos snapped between 2013 and 2018, it contains scenes from bank robberies and dog-fighting competitions.

Khojastehpay believes “Crime Wave Tehran” helped to raise awareness of what he believes to be a “taboo” issue: organized crime in theocratic Middle East. Even though the gangsters of Tehran live in the shadows, their sheer existence shows Iran isn’t the country many Westerners believe it to be.
