Athlete-student or Student-Athlete?
The NCAA conducted a survey in 2011, which found that a greater number of male Division I student-athletes identified themselves primarily as “athletes” rather than “students.” It may seem odd that students who aren’t attending college would not prioritize their education above all else.
However, when athletes join a team, it often becomes their second family. They end up spending more time with their teammates than anyone else, practicing for hours daily and competing on weekends. The camaraderie and sense of belonging that comes with being part of a group can have a powerful impact.
