The “Amateurish” Clause
Back in 2012, Mark Emmert piped up about the controversial topic of paying college athletes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association had a ban on moolah for players, but critics wanted a major overhaul. They claimed there was rampant cheating, not enough support for football and basketball players, and many athletes weren’t even graduating.
But Emmert didn’t budge an inch. He thought paying athletes was a downright lousy idea. Why? Because then, schools would be tempted to bribe players, and the NCAA would sit back and collect all the dough.
