Equal Status, Equal Payment
The Wall Street Journal stated that the ability of the US Women’s National Soccer Team to generate gate revenues that match or exceed the men’s team had been a point of contention. In March 2019, 28 members of the women’s team filed a lawsuit against the US Soccer Federation (USSF).
The lawsuit alleged that if both teams won their 20 required non-tournament games, women’s team players would earn a maximum of $99,000, while men’s team players would earn $263,320. However, the USSF announced in 2022 that it would pay both teams equally, thereby eliminating the contentious pay gap.
