In the NBA, most players are signed and their contracts renewed not because of their accomplishments but because of their potential. Therefore, it is usually concerning when a team decides to do the opposite, as the New York Knicks did in 2001.

The Knicks handed Allan Houston a fully guaranteed, six-year, $100 million deal. Not that Allan did not deserve it, but his best years were behind him, as he was 30 at the time. The management would only realize the mistake when he retired four years later due to chronic knee pain.
