Trash Talk Pays Off

The Chicago Bulls and Utah Jazz met in back-to-back NBA finals in 1997 and 1998, and the common story in both finals was that Michael Jordan was at his best and stepped up when the Bulls’ Karl Malone failed to put his team ahead.

Karl had two free throws at the end of game 1 in the 1997 finals, and he missed both after Scottie Pippen’s trash talk, claiming that “mailmen don’t deliver on Sundays.” The Bulls capitalized and won the series in six games.
