The meme features a photo of the lanky Chinese basketball star sitting at a 2009 press conference, laughing his back off at a teammate’s comment. A genius cartoonist decided to turn that image into a legendary internet meme. And just like that, the Yao Ming meme was born.
However, when Ming was presented with the meme during a 2012 Sports Illustrated interview, he was surprisingly underwhelmed. In fact, he tried to deny that it was him, saying, “It’s officially not me.”
