A Blunt Blade is More Dangerous
Short-track speed skating is one of the most dangerous winter sports. With skaters racing up to 40 miles per hour, crashes and collisions are common, and injuries can be severe. Short-track speed skater J.R. Celski accidentally cut through his left quad with his right skate blade.
The severity of the injury notwithstanding, Celski recovered through determination and went on to win two bronze medals at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
