Pumpkins used to have the life of any regular fruit until the 19th century when Irish immigrants to the United States brought the tradition of using vegetables to scare away spirits during Halloween. In America, they adopted the pumpkin, a fall-harvested squash, as a substitute, leading to the popular tradition of carving them for Halloween festivities.
The one in the photo looks so bored scrolling through its phone until a human passes, and its face changes. Better to keep up appearances before it loses its job.
