The Butler Did It
The butler finally popped his cherry, with the joker for that matter—what an unlikely pair. Judging by his bewildered expression, he also can’t believe what happened. It surprises us because the phrase originates from a murder mystery, not physical intimacy.
Mary Roberts Rinehart’s 1930 novel “The Door” is the earliest known narrative that popularized this cliché. Imagine a wealthy man poisoned during a home dinner with guests who become prime suspects only to discover the least considered butler did it.
