Even the world’s top athletes aren’t immune to run-ins with the law. Lionel Messi and his father, Jorge, were convicted of defrauding Spain of €4.1 million by exploiting tax havens in Belize and Uruguay. The Spanish courts sentenced the footballer to a 21-month prison term, which was later commuted to a fine.
His father received a 15-month sentence, which was reduced to a €180,000 fine. In addition, both men were slapped with hefty fines, as well as a €5 million “corrective payment” to cover the allegedly unpaid taxes and interest.
