Non-Americans Explain Why They Love America, And Some of Their Answers Will Surprise You!
The Turn on Red Rule
Tired of waiting for the traffic light to turn green? In the U.S., this is usually not a problem, assuming you intend to turn right.
In most American states and cities, it’s legal to ignore the red light as long as you’re going to turn right. This helps to make for more efficient traffic control, allows people to get to their meetings on time, and eases the traffic in some of the world’s busiest cities, such as Los Angeles, Washington D.C., or San Francisco. Sure, long traffic jams are still prevalent in the U.S., but some mishaps are simply unavoidable. For the most part, the “turn on red” rule works wonders.
If you’re visiting the U.S., though, please make sure to check statewide laws before turning right on the red. In places like New York City, there are limitations to this rule, and turning on the red is only allowed in traffic lights that have a street sign indicating it.
