How People Say “You All” in America

Southern states say “y’all,” which is a contraction for “you all.” It first appeared in print back in the early 19th century. Experts often call the term one of the identifying characteristics of Southern English.

The rest of the country uses “you guys” as a more colloquial take on addressing a group of people. The term “youse guys” is thought to have been brought by Irish immigrants and is commonly heard in New York, Boston, Chicago, and other areas where they settled.
