Simone de Beauvoir – Deceased at 78 – Writer/Philosopher
Simone de Beauvoir was a famous author and feminist who is regarded as the “mother of the modern women’s movement.” Many also consider her as the greatest French woman of the 20th century. Aside from her extraordinary mind and literary works, de Beauvoir was also known for her long-term open relationship with philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre.
Although they never got married, they stayed together for 51 years. As to why the famous intellectual chose not to marry Sartre, we’ll never really know. Perhaps she liked the autonomy in their arrangement, and her academic prowess took center-stage anyway.
