As much as humans have that biological instinct to want to own things, or show off what they own as well as keep others from threading on their property, so do animals. Wolves and coyotes in particular have been known to exhibit the same territorial behaviors.

They howl, not just to identify themselves or communicate with each other, but to scare off impending predators by making them believe they are larger in number than is true. Maybe this trio was trying to scare off a predator, or just enjoying a regular night howl. Either way, they seem to have been caught at a bad time.
