With the exceptions of celebrities, men and women had to pay an entrance fee in order to get in. They were separated upon entering the building and were allowed to see each other only after depositing their fee, which depended on their sex.
The entrance fee for women was $25 before midnight and $30 after midnight. The only exception to the entrance fee was the night of Bicentennial, in which everyone could get in for free.
