Gentrification is the process whereby poor urban areas get increasingly richer and more developed as the current inhabitants are replaced by wealthier families and businesses. Gentrification takes place in all big cities around the world, but it’s particularly vivid in NYC.

Nowadays, gentrification has gotten everywhere in the Big Apple, even in traditionally folksy neighborhoods such as Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant (colloquially known as Bed-Stuy). Naturally, older NYC residents aren’t too happy about gentrification, as it tends to push poor to middle-class families away from the city.
