The vast majority of human beings don’t spend too much time thinking about or dealing with scaffolding (unless, for example, they work in construction). But Yorkers inevitably live surrounded by scaffolding, as all Big-Apple buildings above six stories must have their facades inspected every five years.
This is the result of a law passed in 1979 after a student was sadly killed in an accident involving falling masonry. There’s even an episode just about NYC’s scaffolding in the first season of the TV series “How To with John Wilson.”
