After beating two of their Group A opponents, Russia had a date with Spain in Moscow. They played a defensive game and managed to stifle Spain, who had possession for a long time but didn’t take any risks.
It all came down to penalties in the end, and Igor Akinfeev saved the day by blocking Koke and Iago Aspas’ kicks. It was absolute mania when the hosts sealed their spot in the quarter-finals against Croatia, where the tournament ended for them in yet another shootout. Talk about an epic World Cup!
