Criminal In Their Midst
Oakland Raiders defensive back George Atkinson hit Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Lynn Swann during a game, resulting in a concussion. The following day, Steelers coach Chuck Noll described the opponent as a “criminal” when he told the public that “There is a certain criminal element in society … in the NFL, too.”
Since then, Atkinson underlined that football is a contact sport, suing Noll for $1 million for defamation. In turn, the Steelers also filed a countersuit and said that the action was a part of a scheme to intimidate Swann.
