The late Justin Fashanu was an English soccer player who scored more than 100 goals in roughly 300 appearances throughout his career. While he was a bold forward in his time, he is best remembered for being England’s first openly-gay top soccer player.
Fashanu came out late in his career but pretty soon overall, considering that many people were still not accepting of gay athletes in the ’90s. His first clubs told Fashanu not to come out publicly, but he still did what he believed right.
