In 2007, the former Utah Jazz power forward John Amaechi was the first NBA superstar to come out as gay. He did so in his groundbreaking memoir “Man in the Middle,” becoming a lasting example for all LGBTQ+ athletes who are too afraid to get out of the closet.
Amaechi’s revelation was received with some backlash, as the world of sports was not as accepting of gay people as it is now. Now praised for his brave attitude, Amaechi also works as a psychologist and consultant.
