Exclusive Photos from Heart of Iran Show Secret Lives of Residents the Government Is Desperately Trying to Hide

Iran’s Parallel Economy

There’s a huge gap between the rich and the poor in Iran, which is best illustrated by the cost of living in the Mellat Park area. It’s one of the richest areas in Tehran, and it was known as the Imperial Park before the 1979 revolution. A three-bedroom apartment can cost anywhere between six and nine monthly salaries, meaning the average Iranian can’t live there.

The mood is also different around Mellat Park, especially for females. For example, educated women often walk around the area without a hijab.
