The Government’s Comeback
In face of the rising discontentment and rebelliousness expressed by Iran’s college-educated classes, the country’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has been campaigning against the rich to protect his reputation among the poor. He once called them “the enemy of the people,” adding that they “suck the blood of the poor.”
From an outsider’s perspective, it’s clear that Khamenei’s regime is to blame for Iran’s depressive economic situation. But for the Iranian people, it’s easy to relate to the Supreme Leader’s words and start hating the rich.
