Poverty in Iran Worse Than You Think
Iran is an impoverished country. According to official figures released by the country’s interior ministry, more than 60% of the Iranian population lives under the poverty line. Out of the roughly 84 million Iranian citizens, a whopping 20 to 30 million live in extreme poverty.
How bad is that? Ethiopia (well known as a developing country) has a much lower poverty rate of 27%. To make matters worse, poverty in Iran reportedly doubled between the start of 2022 and the start of 2023.
