Anxiety over terrorist threats is nothing new for the Olympics. However, the run-up to the 2014 Sochi Games was different in several ways. Suicide bombers struck Volgograd in late December, killing 34 people just a month before athletes and journalists arrived in Russia. Despite Russia’s promises of a “Ring of Steel” around the games, concerns about potential threats ran wild.
There was even talk of a “Black Widow” bomber sneaking into Sochi before the city went into lockdown. Fortunately, once the games began, security took a backseat for most visitors, and people were able to focus on the games themselves.
