The French national football team’s uniforms and iconography are closely tied to two of France’s national symbols: the tricolor flag of red, white, and blue and the Gallic rooster, also known as “le coq gaulois” in French.
While Marianne represents France as a state and its values, the Gallic rooster is a symbol of the nation as a whole. As the French team lost out to Argentina in the historic 2014 FIFA World Cup final, the “Sun of May” on the Argentine flag plucked all the feathers from the rooster.
