At its best, the NBA slam dunk contest showcases the pull of basketball for its fans. However, it turns into something else at its worst, especially when participants put too much thought into their dunks or attempt something they can hardly pull off.
This was the case at the 2005 edition of the contest, when Chris Andersen had nine attempts for his first dunk and six for his second, and he never pulled it off. This led to the rule change that said a dunk had to be registered within two minutes of touching the ball.
