Antarctica’s Shocking Blood-red Waterfalls
Antarctica is bleeding—or so we thought after seeing this mysterious red flow of water. Referred to as the “Blood Falls” glacier, its name clearly comes from its eerie red color, which resembles blood. But in reality, it is caused by iron-rich water flowing from a subglacial lake.
The source of the color was thought to be red algae before more research showed it was iron. And despite its spooky appearance, it is a natural phenomenon that has led to more discoveries.
