From Majestic to Disturbing, The Most Jaw-dropping Winter Photographs You’ll Ever See
The Mendenhall Glacier
Not many people may understand how amazing it is that such an intact rainforest coexists with snowy mountains and glaciers. Trees cannot grow on glaciers because they are made of frozen water and have no soil or nutrients for plants to grow. But once a glacier retreats, it can leave behind nutrient-rich soil where trees may grow.
This picture shows the Mendenhall Glacier, which is located in Juneau, Alaska. And part of its hiking trails encompasses the planet’s largest temperate rainforest—Tongass National Forest.
