Japanese History Under the Ice

Various human artifacts have been discovered in permafrost. The ones in our photo may be more familiar to the Japanese, dating back to the Yayoi period. What primarily characterized that era was the introduction of iron and bronze tools. Locals discovered artifacts such as the Hoko spears and Dōtaku bells seen below at a Japanese excavation site.

According to Japanese folklore, the Dōtaku were emergency bells rung during invasions, and guards of the fortifications and gates used the Hoko spears for defense.
