Ancient Lifeforms Hibernating in Ice

While we’re understandably excited about finding ancient things frozen in icebergs, not every prehistoric specimen should be thawed. For example, scientists discovered that glacier rime holds bacteria that are nearly 15,000 years old. We wouldn’t want an epidemic of new bacteria, as we would have no immunity since we’ve never been exposed.

This image is a close-up of the layered structure, or laminations, found in stromatolites—cyanobacteria commonly found in both fossil and modern environments. This particular stromatolite formed in ancient Lake Gosiute in Wyoming during the Eocene period.
