The First African-American Oscar
The year 1964 is historic for many reasons. One of such is Sidney Poitier. The Bahamian-American actor became the first African-American to win the Academy Award for Best Actor after his remarkable performance in Lillies of the Field.
Even though we still talk about racial discrimination at the Oscars today, Poitier was one of the first to show that there was no place for such bias in the movie industry. Talented actors should be judged by their abilities alone, and never by the color of their skin.
