The Origin of the Elite’s Discontentment
Nothing threatens an authoritarian regime like an educated elite. While Iran’s richest often walk hand-in-hand with the government, North Tehran has no shortage of discontentment. It all started with the 1979 revolution and imploded in 2019 when a protest against the rising fuel prices cost 4,000 lives (to date, it was the darkest day of the Islamic Republic).
Even though lavish parties are “allowed,” the morality police is constantly meddling in student affairs, imposing the separation between men and women on college campuses.
