An Ancient Death Trap

Watching films like “Ice Age” may be the first time we get a glimpse of prehistoric mammoths. But this picture displays real mammoth fossils in a place known as Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota. Mammoths were members of the elephant family that lived during an era that ended ten millennia ago.

Approximately 26,000 years ago, several giant Columbian and woolly mammoths became trapped and died in a pond that was fed by springs located on the southwest edge of present-day Hot Springs, South Dakota.
