The Previous Decades Were Cooler Than This One, and These Photos Prove it
Private Elvis, Captured in Germany
In 1958, a young man by the name of Elvis Presley enlisted in the U.S. Army and moved to a military base in Friedberg, Germany, where he spent 17 months. But back then, he was already a music star, and one of the most famous American symbols of the time.
Some deemed the patriotic adventures of the young Elvis as a marketing move, but he was actually an excellent soldier. He was in charge of driving a Jeep that was part of a tank battalion, and his fellow soldiers respected him. Yet, he did have the habit of sleeping at expensive German hotels during his stay at Friedberg. After all, the barracks were no place for a King!
